G8 Meets in Ireland
Tense G8 Summit May Allow West to Unite on Syria
June 17, 2013
One of the most contentious G8 summits in many years opens today in Northern Ireland.  The high-level meeting is intended to focus on economic issues but is likely to be dominated by the NSA Surveillance scandal and by the huge differences between the West and Russia on Syria. While the summit is likely to result in no significant agreements, it may allow the UK and France to take advantage of the new U.S. position to provide arms to the Syrian rebels to convince the EU to adopt a similar position.

Northern Ireland is preparing for the G-8 Summit tomorrow by mounting the biggest police operation in its history . . . the Irish government is deploying 8,000 officers per day for the event and boosting its border patrols to 900 officers . . . the police are preparing for a union-organized protest against the G-8 throughout the country . . . officials say they are concerned anarchist groups could infiltrate the protests and cause violence . . . officials say officers will use water cannons if demonstrations turn violent . . . authorities are publicizing the large security contingent in hopes of dissuading protestors from violence during the summit . . . they are also diminishing the presence of the British Army, which has supplied security for Northern Ireland since the 1970s, to demonstrate Irish security capabilities and to dampen anti-UK sentiment by Irish nationalists . . . despite the 2005 ceasefire between the government and the Irish Republican Army, dissident Irish republican groups remain active and could stoke violence during the summit.
