A U.S. Grand Jury indicted two men yesterday on charges of trying to illicitly ship uranium enrichment technology to Iran . . . one suspect is an Iranian; the other Chinese . . . click HERE to read a U.S. Justice Department press release in this  indictment . . . the Iranian man was arrested in the Philippines in May; the Chinese suspect is still at large . . . the indictment charged the suspects with shipping material for Iranian centrifuges from the United States to Iran via Hong Kong . . . meanwhile, John Sawyers, the head of MI6, the UK’s foreign intelligence service, said this week that MI6 agents helped foil Iran’s bid to get a nuclear weapon . . . according to Sawyers, without MI6’s work, “you’d have Iran as a nuclear weapons state in 2008 rather than still being two years away in 2012” . . . Sawyers said Iran would likely achieve its goal of developing a nuclear weapon by 2014 . . . he said this makes the chances of a U.S. or Israeli military strike on Iran increasingly more likely in two years . . . the plot discussed in the grand jury indictment is consistent with other worldwide efforts by Iran to help it expand its nuclear enrichment program . . . LIGNET agrees with speculation in the press that the Chinese government probably did not know about this transfer, although this may in part be due to disinterest by Chinese authorities in monitoring such shipments . . . although the MI6 director’s public statements reflect what is widely believed about the Iranian nuclear program, such statements by a UK intelligence official are extremely unusual and may indicate new concern by the British government about the state of Iran’s nuclear weapons research.
