UK: Prime Minister Cameron Remains Vague on EU Membership Referendum

UK Prime Minister David Cameron remained vague today on the prospect of a referendum determining UK membership in the European Union . . . Cameron has stated he wants the country to remain a part of the EU but is facing heavy pressure from his party and an increasingly euro-skeptic public for the UK to leave the EU . . . Cameron told BBC radio today that he thinks an early referendum “would be giving people a false choice” . . . the Prime Minister stated he plans to reassess UK involvement in the EU and return more power and control from the EU back to the UK . . . the discussion on the UK’s membership in the EU is a backlash against growing EU integration measures in response to the eurozone’s debt crisis and nationalistic sentiment in the UK . . . even if the UK left the EU, it would remain tied economically to most EU members through trade and other interests . . . despite the discussion, it is unlikely the UK will leave the EU because of shared interests between the UK and the EU and international pressure for the country to remain in the bloc.
