On August 4, Turkish military officials stated that 40 Generals and Admirals that had been accused of plotting to overthrow the Islamic-lead government in Turkey were forced into retirement . . . military officials stated that there were not enough positions available for the Generals and Admirals to remain in command . . . all 40 of the senior officers had been jailed and accused of working with a terrorist group in connection with a supposed plot to carry out a military coup . . . the likely trumped-up charges against the senior military leaders is an ominous sign for Turkey as it continues to shift towards a more radical Islamic-based form of governance . . . the decision to remove the Generals and the Admirals is likely part of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s effort to reduce the power of the military which has long been the defender of secularism in the country.
