Syria: Fighting Moves Toward Capital

Rebels attacked the headquarters of pro-government television station Ikhbariya with bombs and gunfire today, causing property damage and killing three . . . the station is located 15 miles outside Damascus . . . there were also reports of clashes on the outskirts of the capital . . . President Assad now says Syria is “at war” . . . American intelligence officials say both Assad and the rebels are prepared for a long fight, with no suggestion of negotiation . . . fighting is spreading throughout the country, and is approaching Damascus . . . both the rebels and the military remain intent on a military victory, undermining opportunities for negotiations and a cease-fire.
