Spain: Protests in North Turn Violent

Spain had another problematic day on June 19, as interest rates on 10-year bonds soared to over 7% and protests in the north turned violent . . . the BBC reported 200 miners near the town of Cinera, in the northern part of Spain who hurled rocks at police . . . the miners, who also barricaded motorways in the area, are striking in protest against subsidy cuts and fear for large job losses . . . the protests are symptomatic of the social unrest caused by Spain’s austerity drive . . . as Spain continues to try and tackle its debt problems, more strikes like this are likely and could turn violent.
