Romania: President’s Powers Passed to Parliament after Ruling

Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled on July 9 that the Parliamentary vote suspending President Traian Basescu was constitutional . . . Parliament voted against the right-leaning President on July 6 for overstepping his jurisdiction and interfering in Parliamentary affairs . . . the Speaker of Parliament now has the Presidential powers . . .  the country will hold a referendum on removing the president at the end of the month . . . changes in the rules by the opposition make it easier for the referendum to pass . . . the Constitutional Court will soon rule on whether those changes are legal . . . the democratic checks and balances laid out in Romania’s constitution are now in jeopardy . . . as a result, the impeachment vote will increasingly face a growing chorus of international criticism . . . Romania could face diplomatic isolation if the country impeaches the president based on the new rules.
