Romania: Government Makes More Concessions To Stop Protests

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc on January 17 reappointed Raed Arafat as deputy health minister. . . Arafat is a popular Rimania official; who resigned last week to protest proposed reforms to the health care system . . . his resignation sparked protests that injured around 60 people and prompted Romanian President Traian Basescu to drop the reform proposal last Friday . . . Romania had previously avoided protests despite enacting austerity measures required by an International Monetary Fund (IMF) aid package in 2010 . . . it is unlikely that Arafat’s reappointment will satisfy the protesters . . . the anti-Basescu sentiment is growing and could play a role in affecting governmental policy as in the run-up to elections scheduled for late 2012.
