Police and military officers captured Hussein Ahaddin, a high profile member of the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf radical Islamist terrorist group in the southern city of Zamboanga on November 29 . . . his arrest follows the bombing of a hotel earlier this week that killed at least three people and wounded 27 others in Zamboanga City on the island of Mindanao . . . another attack planned for Isabella city on the island of Basilan was thwarted by authorities . . . Ahaddin has been accused of at least six attacks, including one in 2002 that killed an American soldier . . . an ambush by Abu Sayyaf and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on government troops killed 19 soldiers in October and prompted military retaliation against rebels on the island of Mindanao . . . Ahaddin’s capture is another blow to Abu Sayyaf, which has recently seen much of its top leadership captured or killed . . . however, recent collaboration between this group and the Indonesia-based, al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah is a sign that Abu Sayyaf is looking beyond the Philippines for support and logistical assistance.
