Pakistan’s Supreme Court has given new Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf until July 12 to comply with an order directing him to reopen an investigation of alleged bribery by President Asif Ali Zardari . . . the high court’s directive rekindles the issue that led to the dismissal of former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani who refused to carry out a similar investigation, claiming the president was immune from prosecution . . . the charges stem from suspicions that Zardari and his now deceased wife, Benazir Bhutto, a former prime minister, used a Swiss bank to launder money received as bribes for government contracts . . . the controversy has hung over Pakistani politics for months with neither the court or the executive branch showing little willingness to compromise . . . Ashraf has echoed his predecessor’s position, claiming the Supreme Court ruling is politically motivated and that he will not comply with the July mandate . . . another showdown then is likely given the hardened positions on both sides.
