A commander of Nigeria’s radical Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram declared a unilateral cease-fire with the government today . . . Sheik Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulazeez said he called the truce after a series of meetings with government officials . . . Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, has not confirmed or denounced the statement by Abdulazeez . . . the statements by Abdulazeez are unlikely to represent a consensus decision by Boko Haram to stop fighting or translate into a universal cease-fire . . . the group is now comprised of numerous splinter groups under the main faction headed by Shekau, but no single leader appears to control all the militants . . . at least some factions of Boko Haram are likely to increase attacks in response to efforts by French and Malian troops to dislodge radical Islamists in Mali.
