New Zealand: Elections Reflect Support for Current Leadership

The ruling center-right National Party, led by current Prime Minister John Key won its largest victory in 60 years . . . The National Party received 48 percent of votes compared to 27 percent for the Labor Party . . . New Zealand faces a budget deficit of $13.6 billion and its economy has grown slowly, increasing only 1.5 percent from January to June . . . Key will likely be able to use his majority to pass his economic plans, which include welfare reform and selling government assets . . . these include several government-owned energy companies and the airline company Air New Zealand . . . Key is also considering delaying the implementation of Wellington’s carbon trading system to lessen the cost on families and businesses.
