Kosovo/Serbia: Violence Could Prompt EU to Oppose Membership for Belgrade

NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo (KFOR) were attacked on Monday by Serbian protestors with guns and Molotov cocktails . . . protestors also attacked the NATO forces with clubs and rocks . . . 23 Austrian and German soldiers were injured . . . the NATO forces were working to remove a roadblock near the town of Zubin Potok, 40 miles northwest of Pristina . . . additional violence could have deadly consequences as NATO has now authorized its soldiers to fire live ammunition if they are attacked . . . last week, 20 Portuguese and Hungarian soldiers were injured in a similar manner . . . the violence could damage EU-mediated talks between Kosovo and Serbia scheduled for November 30 . . . a lack of progress in these talks would be a further setback to Belgrade’s EU membership hopes . . . the EU is scheduled to decide whether to grant Serbia candidacy for EU membership on December 9.
