The Iranian media is reporting that next week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will attend in Mecca the Organization of Islamic Countries summit . . . the gathering of representatives from 57 nations is billed as seeking ways to unify the Islamic ranks . . . the civil war in Syria is likely to dominate the agenda . . . agreement on Syria at the summit is highly unlikely given that Iran is one of the Syrian government’s few remaining supporters while Saudi Arabia and Qatar, among other nations in the region, have openly supported the opposition forces . . . Iran and Saudi Arabia also have a long history of poor relations with tensions continuing to mount over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and Shia protests in eastern Saudi Arabia that may have been triggered by Iranian agents.
