Hong Kong/New Zealand: Mega-Upload Founder Arrested As $39 Million in Assets Frozen

The founder of the popular file-sharing website Mega-Upload.com, Kim Dotcom, and three other employees were arrested in New Zealand on January 19 . . . the arrests came after the website, which is registered out of Hong Kong, was shut down on Thursday by U.S. authorities who claim it was facilitating massive worldwide copyright theft . . . Hong Kong Customs Officers proceeded to freeze $39 million in assets on Friday, according to reports by the Wall Street Journal . . . Hong Kong and New Zealand are taking the American indictment of Megaupload staff seriously . . . the cooperation of the officials in Hong Kong and New Zealand could expose them to cyber attacks by the hacker group Anonymous, which launched attacks against the websites of the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Universal Music, the Recording Industry Association of America, and the Motion Picture Association of America, among others.
