Greece: Athens Approves New Austerity Budget

The Greek Parliament approved the tough 2012 austerity budget proposed by the interim government led by Lucas Papademos on Wednesday . . . the budget was approved 258 to 41 . . . violence erupted outside of parliament in response as protestors attacked police . . . the budget is dedicated to cut the deficit from 9% of gross domestic product (GDP) this year to at least 6.7% of GDP next year . . . Greece received a $175 billion rescue package in October, its second since its financial crisis began . . . the EU, IMF, and the European Central Bank will finalize the details of Athens latest bailout package next week . . . as Greece enters its fifth year in a recession, its economy is expected to contract an additional 2.8 percent next year . . . Athens’ financial situation will likely to continue to deteriorate in 2012 and may generate more popular unrest that will further slow the economy . . . however,  by passing this budget as directed by EU officials, Greece remains eligible for further bailout money that it will need in a few months.
