France: Last Ditch Proposal to Boost Sarkozy’s Re-election Bid

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has pledged $550 million in measures to promote job creation . . . Sarkozy announced his intention to focus on jobs after holding a “Crisis Summit” with the leaders of five major unions and business representatives yesterday . . . the reforms are intended to increase French competitiveness and stimulate job creation and retraining initiatives . . . however, unions have said they will not rush to implement Sarkozy’s reform initiatives . . .Sarkozy is trailing in the polls to his Socialist opponent Francois Hollande in April and May’s two-round presidential elections . . . it is unlikely that Sarkozy’s proposals to boost job creation will help him regain the lead in the coming elections . . . the reforms will likely be weakened if they are implemented and likely are Sarkozy’s last desperate gamble to win the approaching elections.
