Paraguay: Former President Says Impeachment Was “Parliamentary Coup”

President Fernando Lugo, who parliament impeached last week, says the move was an illegal coup against democracy . . . legislators removed Lugo for failing to adequately handle deadly land clashes that left 17 people dead . . . regional leaders, including Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina have condemned the impeachment . . . supporters are now calling for “peaceful strikes” to support Lugo . . . despite criticism, the country is unlikely to return Lugo, the first leftist president in Paraguay, to office . . . while some near-term protests are likely, the country is unlikely to suffer significant turmoil or disruptions . . . Vice President Federico Franco – now President -- will likely make diplomatic visits to calm regional leaders and emphasize democratic process in removing Lugo.
