Egyptian security forces launched “Operation Eagle” in early August against Islamist militants in the Sinai . . . the government said it has killed 11 militants, arrested 23 and seized numerous weapons since launching the operation . . . Minister of Defense General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is leading the campaign . . .  President Mohammed Morsi won domestic support for decisive military action in the Sinai after assailants killed 16 border guards near the crossing with the Gaza Strip . . . Israel, which supports activities against radical jihadists in the area, is concerned about the troop build-up and increased weapons in the region, particularly in light of growing anti-Israeli sentiment in Egypt since the election of Morsi . . . the 1979 Camp David Peace Accords between Egypt and Israel limits the military presence in the Sinai in order to create a buffer zone between the two states . . . while Egypt military deployments are technical violations of Camp David, Israel will probably continue to only voice mild objections until Egypt establishes better control of the penisula.
