Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi late yesterday called for parliamentary elections to take place in April . . . his announcement came in a decree outlining a four-stage voting process beginning in April and ending in June . . . the decree states that Egypt’s 27 provinces will be divided into four groups that will each vote separately from April to June in order to give over 50 million voters a chance to participate in the elections . . . although the decree is the latest attempt by President Morsi to ease rising dissent and violent street protests gripping the country, critics and the opposition will remain skeptical on the government’s commitment to address key issues . . . opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei and others will likely continue to threaten a boycott on the elections unless Morsi agrees to constructive talks with secular and liberal opposition groups.
