China/South Korea: Tensions Rise After South Korean Coast Guard Officer Killed by Chinese Fisherman

Protests erupted outside Beijing’s embassy in Seoul on Tuesday after one South Korean Coast Guard officer was killed and another wounded while intercepting an illegal Chinese fishing boat on Monday . . . the captain of the boat allegedly stabbed the two officers after they attempted to seize the boat and detain the crew . . . the Coast Guard had to use tear gas and rubber bullets on another boat of Chinese fishermen in October who were armed with clubs and shovels . . . around 430 Chinese ships have been seized for illegal fishing in the Yellow Sea this year, with arrests and detentions increasing about 25 percent from last year . . . the region the boats have been seized is part of South Korea’s exclusive economic zone and is rich in crabs and anchovies . . . the Chinese government offered a muted apology for the death of the coast guard officer . . . Seoul is expected to add additional funding, ships, and manpower to its Coast Guard as it toughens its response to illegal fishing by Chinese vessels . . . the government may pursue homicide charges against the captain, who has claimed innocence . . . strained relations with Beijing could prompt South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to reconsider a planned visit to China next month.
