On August 25, the government of the Central African Republic and the rebel group the Convention of Patriots for Justice and Peace (CPJP), announced a peace deal . . . the Central African Republic has suffered from insurgencies and internal conflict since it won independence from France in 1960 . . . the CPJP has been fighting government troops for years, primarily in the Northwestern part of the republic, and is responsible for anti-government attacks including election-related violence last February . . . peace and stability in the Central African Republic has always been tenuous, but the recent agreement suggests a period of internal stability may be in the offing . . . even so, the country’s geographic proximity to conflict prone nations like Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo complicate the picture as border areas uncontrolled by the government will likely continue to be used by warlords and criminals . . . if the nation can maintain the peace and avoid cross border conflicts, it may be able to take advantage of  vast mineral deposits, including significant gold, diamonds, oil and uranium deposits, to help stimulate economic growth and development.
