Burma/United Kingdom: More Reforms By Rangoon May Lead to Lifting Sanctions

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has urged Burma to continue the implementation of reforms for increased freedom and democracy after he visited the country  yesterday . . . Burma granted legal status to the political party of democracy activist Aung Sang Suu Kyi, the National League for Democracy, in early December . . . in recent months, Rangoon has also legalized unions, released hundreds of political prisoners, and reduced government censorship of the media . . . Hague said the “British government [will] respond positively” to further reforms . . . Hague is the highest ranking British official to visit Burma since 1955 . . .  the UK is the largest aid donor to Burma, providing $289 million over the last three years . . . participation by Suu Kyi in April’s elections will help provide legitimacy to the regime of Burmese President Thein Sein . . . London is expected to meet with the other EU countries to designate benchmarks for lifting the sanctions in the aftermath of Hague’s visit.
