Burma/Australia: 2014 ASEAN Summit Could be Controversial

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has approved Burma’s chairmanship for 2014 . . . Australia has threatened to boycott the summit if Rangoon does not continue the democratic reforms that have been implemented . . . Burma’s biggest democracy advocate, Aung San Suu Kyi, announced her intention to run in the next elections . . . Canberra’s decision reflects how, without further economic and political reforms by Burma, it will quickly lose the benefits of its renewed engagement with the international community . . .
