Azerbaijan/Israel/United Arab Emirates/Saudi Arabia/Iran: Cyber Attacks Escalate

Hackers attacked several Azerbaijan government websites as well as several Israeli websites on January 16, including the websites of El Al and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange . . . the “AzerianCyberArmy” claimed responsibility for the attack on Azerbaijan, claiming the government was a servant “of the Jews” . . . the hackers also threatened Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev with the same fate as the deposed leaders of the Arab Spring . . . Azerbaijan is Israel’s closest Muslim ally . . . the next day, a group of Israeli hackers took down the websites of the stock exchanges for Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, while a group calling itself “Real Azerbaijani Cyberarmy” attacked dozens of Iranian websites . . . the escalating cyber attacks are expected to lead to further disruptions . . . the cyber feud between Arab and Israeli hackers has already led to the release of sensitive credit card information of thousands of people . . . the cyber attack against Azerbaijan was likely instigated because of the rapidly declining relations between Azerbaijan and Iran.
