French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe announced to the French parliament on Tuesday that Paris would not begin to withdraw French troops from Afghanistan, nor would they be completely withdrawing their troops by the end of 2012 . . . French President Nicolas Sarkozy had suspended military operations in Afghanistan last week after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four unarmed French soldiers during a training exercise . . . the Taliban claimed the shooter was one of its recruits; NATO has said it is too soon to know if this is  the case . . . France has around four thousand troops serving primarily in eastern Afghanistan . . . currently, France is scheduled to withdraw all of its combat troops in 2014 . . . Sarkozy was likely looking for a justification to reduce combat operations of French troops to gain support in the upcoming presidential election . . . Paris recognizes that an early withdrawal would be reckless, cause significant problems, and is not logistically feasible.
