Philippines: Abu Sayyaf Attacks As Deaths From Flooding Hits 1,500

Abu Sayyaf militants fired M203 grenades at a marine post on Monday, wounding two Muslim children, a woman, and one marine soldier . . . the attack in Patikul town on the southern Sulu province of the Philippines is in a region with a large separatist movement . . . Abu Sayyaf has ties to al-Qaeda and the Indonesian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiya . . . the nearby island Mindanao has been hit hard by recent flooding that has led to more than 1,500 deaths and displaced around 330,000 people, according to the Office of Civil Defense . . . Abu Sayyaf is likely seeking to exploit the crisis by increasing its attacks and kidnapping attempts as Manila devotes its attention to the disaster.
