Ethiopia/China: Beijing Provides Addis Ababa With $700 Million in Loans

Beijing signed a $400 million loan agreement with Addis Ababa on Monday to upgrade its water infrastructure and to achieve its Growth and Transformation Plan . . . Chinas also agreed to provide a $300 million loan to the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia . . . Ethiopia has benefited from China’s tariff-free policy for least developed countries . . . China is Ethiopia’s most important trade partner and plans to increase bilateral trade with Ethiopia to $3 billion by 2015.. . . Beijing signed a trade pact on November 16 that provided Addis Ababa with a $100 million loan as well as 65 cars and 25 buses to transport dignitaries visiting Ethiopia . . . Beijing sees Ethiopia as part of its wider investment portfolio of African countries to obtain access to their mineral and energy resources.
