Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s continued delays in signing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) power transition deal have escalated the violence in Yemen and allowed Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to regain a foothold in the country.
Since Saleh returned to Yemen in September, violent clashes between protestors and troops loyal to the Saleh government have escalated. The violence against the protestors has received condemnation from the international community and has prompted both the United Nations and the U.S. State Department to urge Saleh to sign the GCC deal immediately.
