November 18, 2012 1300 Update

Prospects for an Israeli ground operation into Gaza remained high today after the Israeli military expanded air strikes in Gaza due to a fifth day of Hamas rocket attacks. There are intensified international efforts underway to bring about a cease-fire, but Israeli officials have said any cease-fire must include an agreement by Hamas that rocket attacks will not resume.

According to Israeli officials, about 100 rockets were fired from Gaza against Israel today, including several fired on Tel Aviv for the fourth consecutive day, at least one of which was seen being intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

Israel over the last 24 hours expanded its set of targets to include Palestinian media buildings. Israeli officials accused Hamas leaders of using journalists as ‘human shields’ and warned Palestinian reporters to stay away from Hamas fighters and facilities.

Palestinian officials claimed at least 17 were killed by Israeli air strikes today; Israeli officials said 8 Israelis were injured today by rocket attacks.
