For the second time in a week, Turkey stopped and searched a Syria-bound plane for weapons, increasing the likelihood of a military conflict between the two nations. While NATO will still try to avoid military action in Syria without a UN mandate, Western pressure on Russia will increase due to a report that the Assad regime is using Russian-made cluster bombs on civilians.

Turkey searched a transport aircraft carrying humanitarian aid from Armenia to Syria today but permitted the plane to continue on its way after it was inspected, according to Reuters. The action came after Turkey and Syria closed their airspace to each other’s planes and Russia strongly condemned Turkey for alleging that a Syria plane it inspected last week carried weapons for the Assad regime. Moscow said the Syrian plane carried legal radar parts: Ankara said it carried missile parts.
