France: Socialist Election Victory May Doom ‘Austerity’
French President Francois Hollande will likely strengthen his position this weekend as France votes in the second round of legislative elections. If Hollande’s Socialist Party wins a clear majority, he’ll be able to leave behind the budget cutting espoused by his predecessor, Nicholas Sarkozy, and also by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and try to revive the French economy with increased spending. The first round of legislative elections in France last Sunday showed the National Assembly swinging to the left. Polls indicate that President Francois Holland’s Socialist Party will do well again in the second round of elections this Sunday, either winning a clear majority, or leading a coalition government. The outcome will help determine Hollande’s ability to implement his program in France and will also determine the extent to which the French Socialist opposition to budgetary austerity will reverberate across the eurozone. Smaller eurozone countries will likely look to France to lead the way if its leader, Hollande, is seen to have strong support at home.
Hollande, however, will not have a perfectly cleared path, even if the Socialists win big on Sunday. Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Front party won 14 percent of the votes in the first round and is expected to win up to three seats in the National Assembly. That’s not much of a voting block, but these would be the first seats the party has won since the 1980s and would give the opposition a voice in government.
