Russia: Terrorists Threaten 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics

Summary
The September 5 murder of four Russian troops in the North Caucasus region was a reminder of the danger to the Sochi Winter Olympics, which will be held in a nearby part of Russia in early 2014. Islamist extremists have shown the ability to perpetrate terrorist attacks as far north as Moscow and will relish the opportunity to embarrass their nemesis, Vladimir Putin, while the whole world is watching. Putin is likely to do his best to prevent that from happening, as LIGNET explains.

Violence in the North Caucasus appears to be rising.  In August Islamist militants attacked a memorial service, a mosque and a Russian Muslim leader.  With the violence threatening to destabilize the region further and spill over into other parts of Russia, Putin’s government will likely take a more aggressive approach to the problem over the next fifteen months.
