Nigeria: US Re-evaluates Aid with Christians Under Attack
Reverend Adamu Bello of the Church of the Brethren talks about the threat from the Islamist group Boko Haram in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria on May 13, 2012. Fear pervades Maiduguri, which lies at the heart of the Islamist insurgency that has killed hundreds. The city is dotted with military checkpoints, and metal detectors now stand outside churches that are ringed with razor wire. (PIUS UTOMI EKPEI/AFP/GettyImages)

The U.S. State Department is refusing to recognize the Nigerian jihadist group Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, despite its targeted bombings of Catholic churches and murder of 630 people in Nigeria this year, most of them Christians. More worrisome than the State Department’s lack of clarity, however, is the Nigerian government’s failure to take action against Boko Haram. It’s becoming clear that government corruption is preventing a strong response to Boko Haram’s radical Islamists and is compromising the security of Nigeria’s Christians. It may also jeopardize U.S. aid to Nigeria.
Nigeria is both a top oil exporter and a major recipient of U.S. aid, but Christian Nigerians are beginning to worry that U.S. assistance may be wasted on a corrupt government. A House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing last week and subsequent meeting with leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria highlighted disagreements between State Department officials and Nigerians who insist Boko Haram is a terrorist group.
