Libya: Crisis-Plagued Government Struggles for Control

With the transitional government’s failure to impose order since taking control of Libya last November, the integrity of the upcoming elections are in doubt and a worst-case-scenario for Libya and north Africa is appearing more likely.The National Transitional Council's elections chief, Othman al-Kajiji, recently dismissed rumors that the government is considering delaying national elections, saying Libyans will cast ballots for the 200-member assembly the last week in June as required by the NTC’s constitutional declaration. But with no elections infrastructure and a security situation that is spiraling out of control, it is unlikely that the NTC will be able to ensure that any elections held are fair and free of corruption.
