Foiled Canadian Terrorist Plot Shows Continuing Threats from Al-Qaeda and Iran

A plot to derail a passenger train running between Toronto and New York highlights the determination of al-Qaeda to commit acts of terrorism in the West and confirms suspicions about Iranian links to al-Qaeda. This is not al-Qaeda's first plan for a terrorist attack in Canada and it illustrates again that the United States is not the only target for violence by radical Islamist groups.
Many details about the case have not been released by Canadian officials. They did reveal that the alleged attackers were not Canadian citizens and that they were plotting to derail a passenger train in the Toronto area. The attack reportedly was not imminent. According to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police official, the suspects ''were receiving support from al-Qaeda elements located in Iran'' but he also added: ''There's no indication that these attacks were state-sponsored.''
