Despite problems with EU debtor states, the organization is still looking at new member bids. The EU wants to admit Croatia and will consider a membership bid from Serbia. Applications from Turkey, Macedonia, and Iceland are still in trouble; Albania and Bosnia’s bids are going nowhere for the foreseeable future.

The European Union today outlined the status of Eastern Europe states hoping to win EU membership.  Serbia was recommended for candidate status provided it makes further progress in its relations with Kosovo, a former Serbian province that declared independence in 2008 and is recognized as an independent state by 75 countries.  The EU recommended membership negotiations begin with Montenegro.  Although this is the final step to joining the EU, the negotiations will take several years.
