China: New Report Confirms Massive Cyber Attacks on US
This photo shows a 12-story building in Shanghai (center rear) alleged to be the home of a Chinese military-led cyber warfare group. The claim was made in a report issued today by the internet security firm Mandiant, which said its investigations showed that groups hacking into U.S. newspapers, government agencies, and companies 'are based primarily in China and that the Chinese government is aware of them.' A new report by a private internet security firm details China’s continuing and extensive cyber attacks against the United States. While the report mostly confirms what is already known about this threat, it will increase demands from Congress that the United States do more to stop Chinese cyber attacks and defend against similar threats from other nations.
U.S. internet security company Mandiant released a report today blaming the government of China for a campaign of cyber attacks against the United States. According to the 60-page report, an “Advanced Persistent Threat” group, APT1, has conducted a cyber espionage campaign against U.S. government, business and infrastructure targets since 2006. The report calls APT1 “one of the most prolific cyber espionage groups in terms of the sheer quantity of information stolen.”
