LIGNET Senior Analyst Jack Caravelli says in a new interview that he is concerned about the proximity of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and facilities to extremist groups. Caravelli also believes Pakistani military and security services continue to drive the policies of the country which is causing instability and a weak and fragile civilian government.

Caravelli, a long-time former CIA analyst who also served on the staff of the White House National Security Council and as an official with the U.S. Department of Energy, said Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal probably consists of 100 nuclear weapons and that there are efforts to expand it.  He noted that the purpose of the Pakistani nuclear arsenal is to deter Pakistan’s archrival India. For this reason most of the country’s nuclear sites are located in the northwest of the country to place them as far as possible from India.
