Argentina’s Maneuvers Over Falklands Escalate Tensions
The flag of the Falkland Islands flies over number 10 Downing Street in central London on June 14, 2012 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1982 Falklands War. British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed on June 14 to defend the Falklands from Argentinean 'aggressive threats' as the 30th anniversary of the end of the war over the islands was marked in the UK and the Falklands. Tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom flared up as Buenos Aires reaffirmed its plans to sue London-based Premier Oil and prevent it from developing the Rockhopper Exploration’s (London: RKH) Sea Lion oil field. The suit is little more than a distraction, but does help bolster President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner’s political fortunes in Argentina, as LIGNET explains.

Kirchner, Argentina’s leftist president, realizes that she is fighting a losing battle in her efforts to gain sovereignty over the long-disputed Falkland Islands, but her struggle is not without its benefits. By playing into Argentinians' longstanding resentment of the British, she increases her popularity at home and attracts attention away from her failed tenure in office. Any legal case Argentina can bring is dead on arrival since Britain will never recognize the infringement of its sovereign by giving jurisdiction over the matter to an outside judicial body.
